THE members of Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Asaba chapter, have organized a quiz competition for female science students with a call on them to sustain their passion for science with determination and perseverance.
The Chairman of Asaba chapter, Engr. (Mrs.) Demesi Magdalene made the call during a ceremony to mark the 2025 International Day of Women and Girls in Science in Asaba.
Engr. Demesi said for a very long time, women and girls have faced barriers in pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), adding that today, the world now recognized the achievements of women and girls that have overcome the obstacles and made ground breaking contributions to science.
While acknowledging the works that remained to be done in the field of science, she said the association must continue to challenge stereotype and biases that discourages women and girls from pursuing STEM careers. She said the body will create opportunities for mentorship, education and training that support the development of women and girls in science.
She called on members of the association to work together to create a world where women and girls have equal opportunities to succeed in science and make difference in their communities and the world at large.
Also, the Chairman of Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE), Asaba branch, Engr. IkechukwuOsunde, said the girl child is an agent of development and needs to be encouraged.
He said science is the only way for development, calling on the female students to believe in God and themselves, work hard and shun unnecessary distractions that would truncate their future.
In the same vein, the immediate past Chairman of Nigeria Society of Engineers, Asaba branch, Engr. (Mrs.) Felicia Avwenaghagha, who delivered a key note address during the programme, said the world without a woman is incomplete, hence women need science to rule the world, saying that the world cannot continue without science.
In the quiz competition, Patricia Group of Schools took first position, Royal Mira All Saints College, clinched second position while Model Technical College, Asaba, settled for third position.
