The Delta State Government has issued a strong warning to school principals against unauthorized collection of fees for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exams.
This warning was issued by the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, following reports that some school principals have been imposing unapproved charges on students, claiming that part of the money would be used to “settle” officials of the state government.
Ezewu emphasized that such actions are illegal and will not be tolerated, warning that on no account should anyone involve the Ministry in any scandalous act, as she made it clear that any principal caught engaging in this fraudulent activity would face serious sanctions.
“The Commissioner is by this notice sounding a strict warning to any defaulting principal to desist from this criminal act.
“Anyone caught in this fraudulent act will be made to face the appropriate sanction,” the statement read.
Ezewu reiterated that all forms of illegal levies in schools are strictly prohibited, urging parents and guardians to report any instance of unauthorized fee collection. She assured the public that her ministry remains committed to ensuring fairness, transparency, and accessibility in the examination process.
Ezewu urged school administrators to adhere strictly to approved examination fees and policies to maintain the integrity of the system, while noting that the government’s ongoing efforts to curb corruption and exploitation within the education sector remain its priority.
