Biafra Referendum Binding Statement Under Int’l Law –OEAS

Amid the controversy over the acclaimed referendum organised by Simon Ekpa-led pro-Biafra agitation, the Organization of Emerging African States has said that the results of the referendum shall be a binding definitive statement from Biafrans under international laws.

While the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, the Biafra Zionists Federation, BZF, and the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, are still calling for referendum, the Ekpa-led Biafra Republic Government In-Exile, BRGIE, is boasting to have been conducting referendum online.

Director of OEAS, Ebenezer Akwanga, in a 6-point resolution dated June 24, 2024, said the BRGIE referendum further consolidated the self-determination pursuit of the people of Biafra amid decades of alleged marginalization by the Nigerian government.

According to him, it endorsed BRGIE’s self-referendum, a quest which kicked off through e-voting in February 2024 and is expected to be concluded on November 29, 2024.

It also justified its recognition of the Biafra Referendum on the basis that BRGIE recently submitted a request for self-determination to the African Union. “The African Charter of Human and Peoples Rights Guarantees the Right to Self Determination.

“Biafra has submitted a request to the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights to assist with the referendum and peaceable transfer of power to the Republic of Biafra, if so, indicated by the results.

“The OEAS is satisfied with the integrity of the referendum which is being conducted digitally and at local polling stations and is subject to multiple safeguards.

“The results of the referendum will be certifiable and will meet international standards; Millions of Biafrans have already voted in the referendum which is due to be concluded November 29, 2024. “The results of the Biafra Self Referendum shall be considered binding under international law as a definitive statement of the intentions and aspirations of the Biafran people,” Akwanga stated. he development comes barely a month after the Simon Ekpa-led BRGIE dragged the Nigeria Government to AU over the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and for the acceptance of the Biafra referendum.

He claimed that the declaration of Biafra Liberation on December 2, 2024, will bring lasting peace, and stability to West Africa.

However, only a few days ago, Kanu accepted to enter into a negotiation with the Federal Government in order to secure his freedom.

The development has heightened demand for a political solution to Kanu’s incarceration, with over 50 federal lawmakers backing the request.

… As South East Professionals Demand Ekpa’s Repatriation

Prominent sons and daughters of South East extraction have condemned the sit-at-home order enforced by suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and their security arm, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

They noted that the needless action has continued to hurt the socio-economic well-being of the people.

Operating under the canopy of the Coalition of South East Professionals Network in Nigeria and Diaspora (CSEPNND), the critical stakeholders said apart from losing the lives of innocent, hardworking Igbo, businesses have continued to suffer due to the activities of the secessionists.

The professionals decried the killing of soldiers at a Military checkpoint in Aba, Abia State, about two weeks ago, urging the authorities to do everything within the bounds of the law to apprehend the killers, and their sympathisers, and bring them to deserved justice.

This was as they charged the Finnish government, as well as the European Union (EU), to immediately activate measures leading to the repatriation of Simon Ekpa, accusing him of denigrating the image and dignity of Nigeria.

The professionals conveyed their position in a statement signed by Prof O.C Madumere (National President); Mazi Uche Igbokwe (National Secretary), and Dr (Mrs) Chioma Maduka, (Coordinator, Women Wing).

While commending ongoing kinetic and non-kinetic actions by Operation Udo Ka, the group, which comprises intellectuals, politicians, entrepreneurs, and other prominent indigenes, the group urged South Easterners at home in the Diaspora, to support the Military, to root out criminal elements terrorising the area.

The statement reads: “South East Professionals condemn in totality the mindless sit-at-home order declared and enforced by members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their militant arm, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

“We regret to state that this development has continued to have negative effect on the socioeconomic and political lives of South East indigenes and residents, who suffer losses each time the aberration happens.

“As a people, we are known to be peaceful and hospitable, considering our entrepreneurial spirit, which makes us accommodating in every respect.

“It is noteworthy that whatever IPOB members are agitating for may have lost its steam and essence, against the backdrop of the fact that their brothers and sisters are the ones at the receiving end of their activities.

“Also deserving of our loud condemnation, is the recent attack on troops at a checkpoint in Aba, Abia State, resulting in the death of at least five soldiers, whose only “sin” was the protection of lives and property of indigenes.

“As a result of this dastardly act, and others across our states, we declare total support for Operation Udo Ka, and urge the Military to ensure that the enemies of South East are smoked out from wherever they may be hiding, and dealt with appropriately.

“We also use this opportunity to appeal to the government of Finland, and the European Union (EU), to repatriate the fugitive Simon Ekpa, who has continued to instigate violence from his hiding place, while disparaging the Nigerian State”.

Meanwhile, the CSEPNND has tasked political authorities in the zone, especially Governors, federal, and state lawmakers, and Ministers, on the compelling need to support the military in its quest to restore peace and order across the South East geo-political entity.

The group also passed a vote of confidence in the Military High Command, led by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa.
