A popular cleric in Delta State, Bishop (Dr) Kingsley Majemite has called on the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori to look into the completion of the long-abandoned Deghele-Elume Polytechnic.
During a recent visit to the abandoned site, Bishop Majemite expressed deep concern over the institution’s neglect by past administrations. He urged Governor Oborevwori to take decisive action and ensure the project was completed during his tenure, emphasizing the Polytechnic’s importance to the Okpe Kingdom and Delta State as a whole.
Passionate about the welfare and academic advancement of Delta State students, Bishop Majemite highlighted the potential of the polytechnic to enhance educational opportunities, particularly for students in Okpe land.
He stressed that while Delta State boasts several universities and polytechnics, establishing a functional higher institution in Elume would be a significant boost to the region’s development and an added advantage for the state.
Echoing Bishop Majemite’s concerns, Elume residents lamented the sorry state of the Polytechnic. They noted that the premises had been overrun by weeds, with parts of the property repurposed as farmland.
A multi-million-naira administrative block has been converted into a storage facility for cassava and other crops, symbolizing the wasted potential of the abandoned institution.
Despite commending Governor Oborevwori for his impressive infrastructural strides since assuming office, Bishop Majemite passionately appealed for urgent intervention in the Polytechnic project.
“Your Excellency, we are proud of your achievements and have unwavering faith in your leadership. Okpe and Delta State are fortunate to have you as our governor,” the Bishop said.
He continued, “We humbly ask that you revive the Deghele-Elume Polytechnic, a project that has been neglected for far too long. Its completion will bring smiles to our faces and open new doors for our children.
‘’Okpe people value education greatly, and we believe that investing in this Polytechnic will help foster academic excellence and unlock greater opportunities for future generations. Education is indeed the key to progress in any society.”
