Celebrating A Luminary: Andrew Okocha

THE remarkable life journey of Chief Andrew Chukwudi Okocha is a timely reflection as The Pointer Newspaper celebrates 30 years of responsible journalism that extends beyond Delta State to other parts of Nigeria.

Indeed, a hardworking businessman, philanthropist, political leader, and veteran, Chief Okocha’s exemplary life is a worthy template for young Nigerians, demonstrating that achievement and fulfilment can be attained through devotion to duty. His commitment to service and humanity has not only inspired those around him but also set a standard for future generations to aspire to.

Chief Andrew Okocha was born on 17th November 1947, to the late Mr Julius Okofu Okocha and the late Mrs Rebecca Okocha of Idumu Alibu Agidiehe Quarters in Delta State, the kingmakers of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, Delta State, Nigeria. He grew up in Ogwashi-Uku, where he learned the ideals of hard work, integrity, and giving back to the community early in life. His family placed a high value on education, instilling in him the ambition for academic and social excellence. This early life laid the foundation for his dedication to public service and humanitarian causes.

He attended Ladilack Standard School, Apapa, Lagos State, for his elementary education. From an early age, Chief Okocha showed an innate curiosity and thirst for knowledge. He later attended Electro College, Asaba, for his secondary education, further expanding his educational horizons. These formative years played a crucial role in his character development, fostering an awareness of the world around him and the suffering many endured.

Chief Okocha was later enlisted into the Nigerian Air Force Academy. For him, the military was not just a career but a calling, allowing him to develop the leadership traits he now exemplifies. He received thorough training at the prestigious Royal Air Force Academy in England, specialising in Air Police and Counter Intelligence, and earning a diploma. He served in Port Harcourt during the Nigerian Civil War, displaying remarkable courage and dedication. During that tumultuous period, he gained extensive experience in leadership, sacrifice, and service to the nation.

After the civil war, Chief Okocha continued his service, being posted to Benin, Edo, and Lagos, where he served the Nigerian Air Force for over 15 years. He retired with honours in 1984, earning the respect and admiration of his peers. His military service instilled in him discipline and a deep appreciation for leadership and public service, values that continue to guide his business endeavours.

Upon retirement, Chief Okocha ventured into business, harnessing his Igbo entrepreneurial spirit. He established A.C. Okocha Motors Ltd., Accom Tech, Vivipat Nigeria Ltd., and A.C. Okocha Farms, with branches in Asaba, Abuja, and Lagos. These enterprises not only demonstrated his sharp business acumen but also contributed to Nigeria’s economy and provided livelihoods for many employees. Chief Okocha’s entrepreneurial drive is a testament to his relentless pursuit of excellence and his commitment to impacting the lives of those around him.

As a successful businessman, Chief Okocha extends a helping hand to many through his philanthropy. He lives a life in service to society and humanity, believing in the betterment of less fortunate children and supporting the most vulnerable. His humanitarian projects include the provision of educational and healthcare facilities, as well as other basic needs, to his community of Ogwashi-Uku. He demonstrates that wealth is not only measured by how much one owns but also by the impact one has on others, ensuring they smile through his help.

Chief Okocha’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. He has received numerous accolades in recognition of his tireless commitment to community service and entrepreneurship. Among these is the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, a symbol of his selfless dedication to humanitarian causes. He is also a Justice of the Peace and a recipient of the Nigeria Air Force Long Service Award for his meritorious military service. Other honours include a Certificate of Merit from the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, in 1992; the Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria Onitsha Archdiocese Award in 2008; the National Excellence Award from the National Association of Information Technology (NAITS); the National Association of Niger Delta Students (NANDS) Award; the Nigeria Civil War Merit Award; and the International Noble Initiative Club Entrepreneurship Award in 2007.

As a political leader, Chief Okocha has been at the forefront of ensuring that the needs of his people are met. He works tirelessly to attract crucial resources and services, focusing on infrastructure development, healthcare, and education. His political involvement is marked by personal participation in community meetings, where he listens to grievances and works together with residents to solve them.

Chief Okocha is influential not only within his community but also in regional and national matters. He values advocacy and representation as tools to address issues confronting his community, particularly in healthcare and education reform. His leadership is characterised by a genuine desire to uplift others and create an enabling environment for all to thrive.

As we celebrate 30 years of uninterrupted service to humanity, we are reminded not only of Chief Andrew Chukwudi Okocha’s achievements but also of the positive difference he has made in countless lives.
