Celebrating A Medical Icon: Dr. Mayomi Onuwaje, 25 Years Of Healthcare Excellence, Community Service

THE job of preserving lives isn’t often associated with journalism. People rarely consider how responsible, credible, and unifying reporting can safeguard lives. Yet, for the past three decades, that has been the mission of The Pointer newspaper, the flagship of the Delta Printing and Publishing Corporation (DPPC). As they gear up to celebrate their 30th anniversary on October 28th, they will proudly don that hat. But this milestone event will also see them honour a remarkable individual who has straddled the line between life and death for countless others – Dr. Mayomi Onuwaje, the deserving recipient of the Public Service Award.

Dr. Onuwaje, a distinguished consultant radiologist and corporate strategist, boasts over 25 years of exceptional service in both medical practice and corporate governance, leaving an indelible mark on the healthcare sector. His career has been a testament to his unwavering commitment to medical excellence and organisational leadership.

His journey began humbly as a House Officer at the Military Hospital, where he laid the groundwork for a promising career in medicine. From 1998 to 2000, Dr. Onuwaje was the pioneer Medical Director of Lily Hospitals, playing a crucial role in establishing its medical services—an enduring legacy that continues to thrive today. His tenure at Central Hospital Warri, from 2000 to 2005, further sharpened his clinical expertise, setting the stage for his specialist training in Radiology at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital. There, he completed his residency in 2010, earning a prestigious fellowship from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

Since then, Dr. Onuwaje has served as the Executive Director of Lily Hospitals, where his visionary leadership has transformed the hospital from a modest 20-bed general practice with just 12 staff members into a 200-bed, multi-location, multi-specialty healthcare provider spanning Delta and Edo states. Today, the hospital employs over 700 staff members, a testament to Dr. Onuwaje’s leadership and strategic foresight.

His passion for nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals is equally impressive. As a mentor and educator, Dr. Onuwaje has been instrumental in establishing Lily Hospitals as the first and only private hospital accredited by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria for training radiology residents. His commitment to education ensures that young radiologists are well-prepared to thrive in the fast-evolving field of medical imaging.

But Dr. Onuwaje’s influence extends far beyond the hospital walls. A dedicated community servant, he has lent his time and expertise to various organisations, including the Rotary Club and the Nigerian Red Cross, where he served as Chairman of the Warri Branch in 2021. His commitment to humanitarian service speaks volumes about his desire to make a difference, not just in healthcare, but in the wider community.

When he’s not shaping the future of healthcare or giving back to society, Dr. Onuwaje enjoys a good game of chess and the quiet joy of reading.

It is with immense pride that The Pointer celebrates Dr. Mayomi Onuwaje’s outstanding contributions to medicine, leadership, and community development. His unwavering dedication, profound expertise, and visionary leadership make him a truly deserving recipient of the Public Service Award.
