LEADERSHIP is much like gardening. Just as a gardener nurtures seeds with patience and care to ensure they blossom into vibrant plants, a leader cultivates a vision and fosters growth in those they guide, ensuring that their collective potential flourishes.
This nurturing spirit was vividly illustrated at the recent celebration honouring Ogbueshi Dada Okonji, the immediate past chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oshimili South Local Government Area by the Oshimili South PDP Family.
Held recently at Umuezei village in Asaba, Delta State, the event not only marked the end of Okonji’s two-term tenure but also showcased the enduring impact of exemplary leadership.
The celebration was graced by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Peace and Conflict Resolution, Chief Edwin Uzor, alongside Oshimili South Local Government Chairman, Chief Kelvin Ezenyili, Ikemba Asaba, and numerous PDP supporters. The event underscored the essence of leadership that goes beyond mere titles to truly influence and inspire.
Chief Edwin Uzor encapsulated the spirit of the occasion with his praise for Okonji’s leadership: “He is a chairman who believes in giving, unity in the party, and equality among members. Throughout his tenure, we saw a positive turnaround in elections in the party’s favor. He has done well, and we are confident his successor will fill the shoes he has left behind,” he said.
Uzor’s remarks highlighted a critical aspect of leadership: the ability to uplift and unite people while steering them towards goals.
The Oshimili South local government chairman, Obi Kelvin Ezenyili added a layer of reflection to the celebration. He lauded Okonji’s commitment to transparency and integrity, stressing the importance of these values over financial gains. “Our gathering today is a testament to his success,” Ezenyili said.
He spoke further, “Ogbueshi Dada Okonji, your leadership has imparted invaluable lessons to the people of Oshimili South. If your tenure had not been as effective as it has been, we would not be here celebrating your achievements today.
“The people of this local government should recognize the importance of transparency and integrity, rather than focusing solely on financial matters. Your example, both past and present, continues to guide and inspire us. We hope that you will continue to offer your guidance to the new Party Chairman, as your leadership has been unparalleled.
“We also trust that the current chairman will build upon the foundation you have established, striving to achieve even greater progress for Oshimili South. With the collective experience of leaders like yourself, Chief Uzor, and myself, who have been given the opportunity to serve again, we are committed to upholding the high standards you have set and ensuring that our leadership meets the expectations of the people.”
The emphasis on integrity echoed a timeless lesson in leadership: that the true measure of a leader’s success is not just in the achievements but in the principles upheld along the way.
The celebration also spotlighted the role of women in leadership, with Oshimili South Woman Leader, Mrs. Ngozi Nwabuonwu, highlighting the significant strides made under the leadership of the immediate past chairman in promoting women’s participation in politics. “Our Chairman made a profound impact by championing women’s roles in the Oshimili South political landscape. He was uniquely dedicated to ensuring women’s inclusivity, advocating for the representation of 6-7 women in each ward—an unprecedented initiative.
“He also established the position of vice-chairmanship as a reserved role for a woman. We remain deeply appreciative of his efforts and continue to support him. We wish him continued success and goodwill in the future. His tenure was marked by unity within the party, resulting in a smooth and impactful period of leadership,” she said.
This advocacy for inclusion and empowerment is a powerful reminder that good leadership fosters an environment where all voices are heard and valued.
The Leader of the Legislative Arm of Oshimili South, Hon. Michael Okonji, reflected on the historical significance of the event: “This is the first time the committee has celebrated a PDP chairman’s return home after eight years and three months of dedicated service. We hope he will have another opportunity to serve Oshimili South at a higher level,” he remarked. His words underscored the lasting impact of leadership that goes beyond the immediate and leaves a legacy for future generations.
Likewise, PDP Delta North Senatorial Chairman, Evangelist Moses Iduh acknowledged the considerable achievements of the outgoing chairman, noting, “Maintaining leadership over 4-8 years is no small feat, and you have excelled in this role. Your contribution as a party Chairman has been exemplary, and your efforts have significantly stabilized Oshimili South.
“Your leadership brought unity and streamlined processes, which has been greatly appreciated. While you leave behind big shoes for your successor, I am confident that he is well-equipped to step into them and continue the work you have so commendably started.”
Also, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee and one of the leaders of PDP in the area, Mr. Tobechukwu Okonkwo said the occasion was organized to honour Okonji, who left an indelible mark in party administration and commended the immediate past Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, the State Governor, the Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and Elder Moses Iduh for their positive interest in the affairs of PDP in the local government areas
In a nod to the future, newly appointed Oshmili South PDP Chairman, Mr. Chike Ifesiokwu pledged to continue Okonji’s legacy: “I came prepared and am ready to collaborate with the local government head. We will not allow any other party to triumph in his local government,” Ifesiokwu declared.
In his final address, the outgoing Oshmili South PDP Chairman, Hon. Dada Okonji expressed profound gratitude for the celebration: “We thank God for this fine day. Before I became PDP Chairman, I sought divine assistance, and He answered. During my tenure, I have been able to raise female and youth political ambassadors who are working exploits today.
“I appreciate the State Government, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and former Governor Sen. Dr. IfeanyiOkowa for their support during my tenure. I am grateful to those who came out to celebrate; this motivates me to continue working hard for the PDP,” Okonji said.
His reflection on divine guidance and community support serves as a poignant reminder that great leadership is often rooted in humility and a commitment to service.
History is replete with leaders who have left indelible marks on their societies. From Nelson Mandela’s unwavering fight against apartheid to Abraham Lincoln’s leadership during the American Civil War, great leaders have demonstrated that true influence lies in the ability to inspire, unify, and effect change while adhering to core principles.
This commitment to continuity and collaboration is a hallmark of effective leadership, ensuring that the values and goals set by predecessors are carried forward.
While the Oshimili South PDP moves forward, the lessons from Okonji’s tenure will undoubtedly guide new leadership. His legacy is a testament to the power of integrity, dedication, and inclusive vision.
As his achievements are celebrated and Oshmili South PDP looks towards the future, they are reminded that effective leadership is not just about steering the ship but about charting a course that ensures smooth sailing for all who follow.
