Cholera: EDHA Decries Indiscriminate Dumping Of Refuse

…Calls On LG Chairmen To Provide Refuse Dumps

THE Edo State House Of Assembly, yesterday expressed concern over the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on major roads and drainages in Edo State which has constituted a health hazard.

The Deputy Speaker, Maria Oligbi-Edeko who raised a motion under matter of urgent public importance, expressed great worry that the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on roads and drainages have adverse effects on the health of the people, especially with the outbreak of cholera in some parts of the country.

In the motion, co-sponsored by 10 other lawmakers, Oligbi-Edeko said that the wastes dumped on roads and drainages were emitting offensive odour, constituting eyesore and reducing the aesthetic value of towns and cities in the state.

She noted, “the dumping of refuse and other waste materials is obstructing free flow of flood and causing flooding and gully erosion in the state.

She, therefore, called on the local government chairmen to build refuse dumps and to set up monitoring teams to stop the menace especially at night.

The Deputy Speaker charged health officers in the state to embark on enlightenment campaign on the importance of proper waste disposal and environmental Sanitation. The speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, thereafter directed the clerk of the house, Yahaya Omogbai to forward clean copies of the resolution to relevant authorities for immediate action.
