The Governing Board of the Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) has pledged its full support to the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Hon. Charles Aniagwu in his efforts to revitalize the state-owned media service and reposition the state’s information apparatus.
The Chairman of the board, Hon. Austin Chikezie made the commitment during a courtesy visit to the ministry, where he led board members to congratulate the Commissioner on his reappointment.
Hon. Chikezie noted that the commissioner’s reappointment was a testament to his proven track record of delivering results in previous assignments.
During the visit, the board highlighted several pressing challenges facing DBS. Hon. Chikezie pointed out that the broadcasting equipment at both DBS, Asaba, and Delta Rainbow Television (DRTV), Warri were outdated or nonfunctional, severely limiting their capacity to provide quality services.
He urged the commissioner to advocate for the urgent modernization of these facilities, emphasizing that upgraded equipment was essential to meeting the increasing demand for reliable and modern media services in Delta State.
In response, Hon. Aniagwu expressed gratitude for the board’s support and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to addressing the concerns raised.
He revealed that, under the directive of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, discussions were underway to unify the operations of DBS and DRTV. According to him, the move aimed to create a more efficient and effective media organization capable of delivering optimal services to the people of Delta.
To facilitate the unification process, a technical committee comprising staff from both stations was established. The committee has since submitted its report, which is scheduled for government review before the end of the week.
The commissioner also addressed the issue of land encroachment on DBS property in Umunede, expressing appreciation to the Obi of Umunede for efforts to safeguard the land. He assured that the government would take decisive action to reclaim any encroached portions.
To this end, he directed the management of DBS to collaborate with the Ministry of Lands to produce a detailed report on the land’s dimensions to guide the government’s recovery efforts.
Regarding the revitalization of the Ubuluku substation, a critical facility for unifying DBS and DRTV signals, Hon. Aniagwu confirmed that the government recognised its strategic importance.
He assured that, based on the technical committee’s recommendations, the substation’s rehabilitation would be prioritized to enhance operational efficiency. Once completed, the upgrade will significantly improve signal transmission and service delivery, ensuring that Delta residents receive quality broadcasting services.
