Defiant Ladies U17 Football Tournament: Catherine Onyeme Urges Action On Issues Facing Young Girls

THE wife of the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Lady Catherine Onyeme has called for greater action to support young girls in overcoming societal challenges, such as teen pregnancy, child marriage, trafficking, and gender-based violence.

She delivered this message during the closing ceremony of the Maiden Edition of the Defiant Ladies U17 Football Tournament in Asaba.

In her speech, she highlighted the significance of the tournament as ‘more than just a competition’.

“It has been a platform for young girls to showcase their skills, connect with their peers, and build confidence. Each of you has shown the power of determination and the beauty of teamwork, exemplifying the very best of what sports can bring to our lives,” she said.

To the athletes, she shared: “Whether you lifted the trophy or not, each of you is a winner. By stepping onto that field, you have broken barriers, made new friends, and proven that girls have a vital role to play in the world of sports.”

She encouraged them to apply the lessons of resilience and teamwork to other areas of their lives, emphasising that this tournament marks “only the beginning” of their journey. In addition to celebrating the achievements of the players, Lady Onyeme underscored the tournament’s broader mission to address key social issues. She spoke about the responsibility to address challenges facing young girls and called for collective action to build a society in which girls feel “safe, valued, and respected.” She further extended her thanks to the sponsors, recognising their role in “investing in the future of women’s football in Nigeria” and in creating opportunities for young girls.

Lady Onyeme also expressed hope that the tournament will become a yearly tradition, inspiring and empowering more young girls with each passing year.

“As we close this tournament, let us celebrate the achievements of these young girls. Let us promise to continue supporting them, to stand beside them as they pursue their goals, and to ensure that every girl in Delta State and across Nigeria has the chance to rise, thrive, and succeed,” she added.
