Delta CRC Vows To Curb Human Rights Violations

  • Expels Member Over Misconduct

By Andy Akeni

The Delta State chapter of Civil Rights Council (CRC), has vowed to fight against human rights abuses in society with a warning to members to avoid irresponsible conduct that may portray the organization in bad light, or be ready to face sanctions.

In press statement after their state council meeting held in Asaba, signed by Unit Coordinators; Comrades Joy Edigbine, Sundrix Ogor, Gabriel Omorere and Ojumude Tosan Bishop, the council also announced the expulsion of Mr. Lucky Ibiri from membership and leadership of the organization as directed by the national leadership of CRC due to alleged gross misrepresentation, abuse of power and privileges.

CRC in the statement assured that the Delta State Council will continue to function in accordance with the core values of the body in defence of human rights, rule of law, democracy, political accountability and probity in the discharge of government business.

The council also resolved that all members should re-validate their membership at the unit level as directed by the national body as new members are welcome from all spheres of society. While highlighting some of the successes and challenges of the council, the body said a lot of progress was achieved, adding that the council is embracing better ways to move forward and impact positively on society as it would announce the very soon date of election into vacant leadership positions. The press statement ended with a call on all members to be abreast with the Constitution of Nigeria and rise against human rights abuses, ensure rule of law, justice and abide by the code of conduct of members in discharging their roles to advance development of society.

Earlier, the National Coordinator of CRC, Comrade Arochukwu Paul Ogbonna, urged members to be firm and resist all forms of injustice and agitate for positive change in society.

According to him “Comrades let us try to redouble our efforts to fight oppression in society where no man is discriminated and all human rights are respected”

While lamenting bad governance leading to high cost of living in present day Nigeria, he called for togetherness in the fight against corruption to engender an egalitarian society where all are equal before the law.

The meeting featured reports from different units across the state, goodwill messages and experiences of many issues of human rights violations resolved by members.
