Delta Reviews Water Policy

BY KASE GREATNESS

The Delta State Small-Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (STOWASSA) recently conducted a significant program to review and update its water policy for small towns.

At the event, which was held in Asaba, the Delta State Capital, the General Manager of STOWASSA, Engr Anthony Unuafe, emphasized in his opening remarks that evolving circumstances necessitated fresh approaches to water treatment, management, maintenance, and service delivery.

He underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving the agency’s goals, stressing that laws were essential for guiding STOWASSA as a collective entity rather than as individuals. Engr. Unuafe pointed out that the last water policy review occurred in 2015, making the current review long overdue. He highlighted the need for sustainable practices following the policy updates to ensure lasting improvements.

He also urged the team to leave a positive legacy, reminding them that while no one remains in service forever, their contributions can make a lasting impact. He advocated for the sharing of knowledge, as collective expertise is crucial for the agency’s success.

Meanwhile, Barr Ikemefula Anuchauka, a resource facilitator, outlined strategic measures for achieving better results as a team. He encouraged STOWASSA to focus on enhancing water supply and sanitation services in communities with populations between 5,000 and 20,000 people.

Anuchauka identified critical areas such as asset management, service delivery, and maintenance, urging regular assessments of existing infrastructure. He also emphasized the importance of collaboration with other agencies to share best practices and the media to communicate their activities to the public effectively.

The event underscored the importance of sustainable water management practices to ensure the well-being of both the community and the environment. It highlighted the need for collaboration among stakeholders to implement effective policies that protect water resources for future generations.
