Delta SURWASH Programme Stresses Need To Safeguard Water Resources

AS Delta State joins the rest of the world in the commemoration of the 2025 World Water Day, residents in the State have been called upon to adopt best practices in water conservation, hygiene, and sustainability which underscores the need for responsible water usage to ensure access for future generations.

The Ag. Programme Coordinator, Delta State Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) Programme, Engr. Clement Adiotomre made the call in Kwale during the sensitization outreach organized by the SURWASH Programme as part of activities to mark the 2025 World Water Day.

The Programme Coordinator, represented by the Programme’s Water Quality Officer, Paula Nwokolo,  said that since water is life and also a vital resource that demands careful management, there is the need to encourage individuals, communities, and businesses to embrace best practices in the usage of water.

“We conserve water when we reduce water wastage by fixing leaks, using water-efficient appliances, and practicing responsible consumption at home and in workplaces. It is also our responsibility to protect water sources by avoiding sinking boreholes close to the soakaway pit, and to avoid polluting water bodies with waste, chemicals, or harmful substances in order to safeguard the environment” she stated.

Speaking during the occasion, Assistant Director, Department of Environment, Ndokwa West Local Government Area, Mr. Egbe Benson thanked the SURWASH Programme for choosing the local government as one of the pilot areas for implementation and also for bringing the world water day celebration to Kwale.

“Water is life, and we all have a role to play in preserving this precious resource. Through conscious efforts and responsible habits, we can secure safe and sustainable water access for generations to come.

Mr. Benson used the medium to thank the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), the Small Town Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (STOWASSA) and the Delta SURWASH Programme for their commitment and efforts to ensure environment friendly interventions by replacing the Schemes’ generator powered boreholes with solar panels.

During the event, paper presentations such as Glacier Preservation: Impact of glacier melting on drinking water, agriculture, clean energy and healthy ecosystem; Sustainable water conservation and management through good sanitation practice, among others were delivered with interactive sessions where invited stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector partners, and community groups, discussed the challenge and proffered sustainable water solutions.
