Delta’s Example For Building Global Peace

AS conflict and violence continue to shatter lives across various parts of the world, Nigeria is not exempted. The International Day of Peace (IDP), observed annually on September 21, reminds us of our shared responsibilities in fostering a peaceful, non-violent, and harmonious world. Established by the United Nations in 1981, it is not just a symbolic event but a clarion call for every individual, community, and nation to prioritize peace as a necessary precursor for peace.

The significance of peace cannot be overstated. It is the foundation upon which human progress, sustainable development, and social justice are built. Without peace, no society can thrive, no economy can grow, and no individual can reach their full potential. This year’s International Day of Peace (IDP) coincides with the SDG summit, reflecting the critical link between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and peace-building. These global goals, from eradicating poverty to ensuring quality education, are designed to create a fairer, more inclusive world. But their success hinges on peace—peace within nations, peace among communities, and peace within ourselves.

Every September 21, people worldwide are called to reflect on their role in promoting peace, not just through grand gestures but through everyday actions. The International Day of Peace is marked by various activities, including workshops and interactive sessions which focus on the 17 SDGs and their role in fostering peaceful societies.

In Delta, the administration of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has embraced this responsibility with vigour, setting up the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Peace Building and Conflict Resolution. From his first day in office on May 29 2023, Governor Oborevwori has prioritized peace and security as key pillars of the MORE agenda which encapsulates his vision for a peaceful and prosperous State, where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

Yet, even as we strive for peace, challenges remain. The unfortunate events in Okoloba and Okuama communities, in Bomadi and Ughelli South Local Government Areas of the state, where violence led to the loss of lives and the displacement of families, serve as reminders of the fragile nature of peace. However, Governor Oborevwori’s swift response, marked by efforts to restore calm and rehabilitate affected communities, remain an instructive proof of his commitment to fostering peace in the state. His leadership in such moments of crisis highlights the importance of strong governance in maintaining stability and ensuring the well-being of citizens.

But government efforts alone are not enough. Achieving lasting peace requires a concerted effort, and here, the role of local stakeholders is crucial. Traditional rulers, community leaders, religious heads, civil society organizations, youth groups, and women’s associations must all play their part in promoting dialogue, mediation, and understanding within their communities as echoed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Peace Building and Conflict Resolution, Chief Edwin Uzor, recently.

Having marked this year’s International Day of Peace (IDP), it is essential to recognize that peace is not simply the absence of conflict. True peace encompasses justice, equity, and development. It is about creating conditions where every person can live free from fear and oppression. The 24-hour global ceasefire called for by the UN General Assembly is a powerful symbol, but it must be more than just a day of silence. It should inspire continuous efforts to resolve conflicts through non-violent means and to promote dialogue as the primary tool for addressing disputes. We are reminded that our actions contribute to the larger goal of global peace. Whether it is through community engagement, supporting government initiatives, or fostering a culture of tolerance and mutual respect, each of us has a role to play.

The peace we seek globally begins at home—within our families, our communities, and our institutions.Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to peace and security as part of his administration’s core objectives aligns perfectly with the global goals of the International Day of Peace. The road to peace may be long and difficult, but with sustained effort, the vision of a world united in harmony is within reach.
