Deve: Monarch Warns Of Fate Awaiting Offenders

BY PATRICK MGBODO

The Asagba of Asaba, HRM Obi (Prof) Epiphany Azinge, SAN, has issued a strong warning against the imposition of illegal levies, popularly known as “deve,” on developers in Asaba.

The monarch declared that the Asaba community would not hesitate to disown anyone who defies the law and obstructs the city’s progress through such unlawful acts.

HRM Obi Azinge made this pronouncement during an interview with journalists as part of the activities marking the five-day celebration of his coronation as the 14th Asagba of Asaba.

This event follows his official presentation of the Staff of Office by Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, after succeeding the late HRM Obi (Prof) Chike Edozien as the Asagba of Asaba.

In his remarks, the revered monarch emphasized the importance of adhering to the laws of the land and reiterated his commitment to fostering an environment conducive to development.

“I believe we have raised this matter repeatedly with our people,” HRM Obi Azinge said. “We encourage our people to obey the laws of the land, especially regarding the illegal development levy. We have warned that anybody found disobeying the laws of Delta State on this issue will be disowned by Asaba, and the community will not offer them any protection.”

The monarch disclosed that a committee had been set up to investigate cases related to illegal levies and that a report on their findings is expected soon. He urged developers facing harassment to report such incidents directly to him or the palace for prompt intervention.

“We want those developing Asaba to resist these illegal fee imposers,” the Asagba added. “If necessary, they should report such cases to me or the palace. We are committed to addressing any threats or obstacles to development in Asaba.”

HRM Obi Azinge acknowledged that some individuals may view such levies as a means of making quick money. However, he emphasized that the enactment of laws prohibiting “deve” necessitates strict compliance. As a product of the legal system, the monarch underscored the importance of upholding the rule of law.

“Once a law is in place, it is incumbent on our people to obey it.

I have directed this accordingly. Obeying the laws of the land brings merit and fosters harmony,” he said. “We must cooperate to ensure that the law is followed to the letter.”

The coronation celebrations, which brought together dignitaries and residents, provided a platform for the monarch to reaffirm his commitment to the development and unity of the Asaba community.

By taking a proactive approach to addressing illegal levies and encouraging compliance with the law, HRM Obi Azinge is setting the tone for a reign focused on lawfulness, fairness, and the continuous growth of Asaba.
