Dissidents Frustrating Efforts To Tackle Floods –Nani

BY ELOHOR FOGHOLA

THE Chairman of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Chief John Nani has frowned at unwholesome acts by those he described as dissidents,  saying they are frustrating the efforts of the state government to address the flood menace.

Speaking in Sapele town, Sapele Local Government Area, Nani reiterated the commitment of Governor Sheriff  Oborevwori to advancing Delta through the MORE Agenda, saying that DESOPADEC continues to evacuate canals across the state.

According to Nani, “we are here on inspection to ascertain the level of work that has been done. Work is going on simultaneously across the state and we have opened blocked drainages and canals in Kiagbodo/Bikorogha, Bekederemo river in Kiagbodo, Ika, Isoko, Bomadi, Agbaroh, Echerodein Ughelli, Udu, Effurun, and Warri’’.  The DESOPADEC Chairman observed that while the project progressed, there were some challenges which includes the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into the cleared canals. He urged residents to refrain from these harmful practice, as it could cause flooding in our communities.“We want to appeal to residents to help government to help them by disposing their waste through the appropriate channels.

“We have a proactive Governor who has set up modalities in place to ensure that the impact of the coming rains, as predicted by the Nigeria Meterological Agency (NiMet), is minimal. He added that the Governor has set up a Flood Disaster Management Committee, headed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) to ensure that persons displaced from their homes as a result of the impending flood are catered to.  Nani warned those who built on drainages and waterways to remove them immediately as the state government has commenced demolition of such structures.

Earlier, the team visited the Ugbeku Canal at Amukpe where the Commissioner for Environment, Ejiro Jamani commended Governor Oborevwori for the work done across the state. He appealed to the residents to take ownership of their environment and desist from illegal waste disposal methods, construction of buildings on drainage and waterways.
