Don’t Exploit Contractors, DTSG Tells Project Supervisors

BY DINMA BIGWA

To ensure quality projects, the Delta State Small Towns Water and Sanitation Agency (STOWASSA), has trained supervisors to effectively monitor the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation And Hygiene (SURWASH) project in the state.

Recall that the agency had earlier trained contractors to handle the project implementation, charging them to deliver quality projects to Deltans in line with the desires of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

Consequently, the agency deemed it necessary to train supervisors who would monitor contractors for the ongoing SURWASH projects to achieve global and sustainable standards.

Speaking during the workshop, the General Manager of the agency, Engr Anthony Unuafe said “An engineer’s greatest joy is self-actualization, the delivered result, the well-being of the people that you have satisfied gives you the greatest joy. Supervisors and contractors should work in unity and love and, proffer solutions where necessary to make their jobs stand out’’

He urged supervisors not to see mistakes from contractors as an avenue to enrich their pockets. “Project supervision is teamwork, dynamic team building. Do not utilize a problem as a source of making money.

‘’Do not be that kind of supervisor that when there is a problem, it becomes an opportunity for you to make money even when your contractor makes a mistake. You are an expert sent to guide the execution of the job to stand out”

In his remark, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources Development, Dr Charles Diai, represented by the Director of Administration, Mrs Amiteye Millie, said the essence of project supervision was to achieve desired results.

“We monitor to ensure objectives are met. We monitor to ensure results are achieved. Monitoring is result-based. As a supervisor, do not compromise, these projects you are monitoring are World Bank-supported projects. Put in your best so that at the end, they will know you are people of integrity”

A former Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Engr Blessing Edewor, the Director General of the Delta State Water Sector Regulatory Commission, Engr Henry Idama, and the Director of Water Supply in the ministry, Engr. Kohogho were among the resource persons for the workshop.

The workshop covered several topics such as Project Supervision, Monitoring and Evaluation, Sustainable Project Monitoring, and Project Management and Leadership.
