BY PATRICK MGBODO/DINMA BIGWA
The Delta State Government has again demonstrated inclusivity in the MORE agenda by providing critical educational support to 687 children of deceased civil servants and those with disabilities.
The scholarships, approved by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, were presented to the beneficiaries in Asaba, the State capital, through the Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board.
At the event, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof Nyerhovwo Tonukari, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Higher Education Ministry, Mrs Bridget Odobor said the gesture honours the legacies of those who served the state and acknowledged the incredible potential within every child regardless of their circumstances.
‘’This scholarship is not merely a financial resource; it is a symbol of our unwavering commitment to recognize and support your journey. To the students with disabilities, your determination and courage reminds us that true strength lies not in the absence of challenges but in the willingness to face them head-on’’ he said.
According to the Chairman of the Scholarship Board, Hon Shedrack Agediga, the Oborevwori’s administration’s MORE Agenda was poised to encourage students to be more committed to their academic pursuits through its financial support services.
‘’Our objective is to cushion the effects of financial hardship to persons in need or who are exceptional in pursuit of the proverbial Golden Fleece, which we hope will bring happiness to our people.
‘’We hope that these persons will ultimately turn themselves into entrepreneurs, thereby becoming employers of labour and masters of their economic destinies’’ he said.
Remarking, the Executive Secretary of the Scholarship Board, Dr Godfrey Enita noted that 627 children of deceased civil servants and 60 students with disabilities across the three levels of education are beneficiaries of the award.
He charged the beneficiaries not to see the gesture as their share of the ‘national cake’ even as he called on well-meaning Deltans to partner with the state government ‘’to build our educational system and encourage our students in their academic endeavours’’
Consequently, the President of the National Association of Delta State Students (NADESSTU), Comrade Monday Wiska, among other guests who spoke at the award ceremony, thanked Governor Oborevwori for not forgetting the children of deceased civil servants and students living with disabilities.
On behalf of other beneficiaries, the Youth Leader of the Nigeria Association of the Blind and a student of Political Science at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Comrade Joshua Odjuwu, thanked Governor Oborevwori for making the MORE agenda disability-inclusive.
