  • Over 10,000 Bags Of Rice, Others Delivered To 11 LGAs

BY IFEANYI UWAGWU

As part of its response to the impact of subsidy removal on Deltans, the Delta State Government, yesterday, began third phase distribution of food palliatives to Poor and Vulnerable House Holds (PVHH), as well as widows and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across the state’s 25 Local Government Areas.

The Secretary to the Delta State Government (SSG), and Chairman of the State Subsidy Palliatives Committee, Dr. Kingsley Emu, emphasized the importance of ensuring that the distribution of the items gets to the intended beneficiaries, as he urged coordinators and members across all local government areas to distribute the items effectively and equitably.

Dr. Emu, who superintended over the distribution of the  palliative items to 11 Local Government Areas at the DAPA Warehouse in Ibusa yesterday, stated that 940 bags of 25kg of rice and 150 bags of 25kg of garri were being allocated to each local government area. These items are to be divided equally among the 20 DSIEC wards within each of the 25 LGAs, totaling 500 wards, to ensure every ward member receives their share.

He highlighted that the State Palliative Committee chose the DSIEC wards for distribution to ensure a broader reach and the ease of administration, while emphasizing that priority should be given to individuals who have not previously benefited from the palliatives. Dr. Emu called on the Committee Coordinators to maintain transparency in order to fully deliver on their assignment.

The 11 Local Government Areas that received their palliative items include; Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Oshimili North, Oshimili South, Isoko South, Ika South, Warri South, Uvwie, Ndokwa West, Ughelli North, and Ughelli South. This initial distribution marks the kickoff of a broader state-wide effort to support those most in need.

Dr. Emu reiterated the commitment of the Delta State Government to providing relief to its citizens during these challenging times. He stressed the need for accountability and transparency in the distribution process to ensure that the palliatives reach the intended recipients without any diversion or delay.

The palliative distribution is part of the Delta State Government’s comprehensive plan to cushion the effects of the subsidy removal. The government has taken proactive steps to identify and support the most vulnerable segments of the population, ensuring that no one is left behind.

It would be recalled that on the 13th of June 2024, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori flagged off the third phase of the state’s palliative distribution program, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare of the people. The governor’s leadership and proactive measures have been widely appreciated as they demonstrate a deep commitment to addressing the needs of Delta State’s residents.
