Delta State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Daniel Odinigwe has flagged-off the 9th edition of the Governor’s Award for young scientists in the state.
The event, which held at the Delta State Hub Innovation Center in Asaba, celebrates innovation and academic excellence by recognizing outstanding students in the fields of science and technology.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Odinigwe explained that the Governor’s Award for Nigerian Scientists is a national competition conducted across the 774 local government areas in Nigeria, emphasising that this event marked the Delta State edition, featuring 25 exceptional students, each representing one of the state’s 25 Local Government Areas.
Dr. Odinigwe, who said that the critical role of nurturing innovation and young talent in driving sustainable development, stated that the annual award provided a platform to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators, who were poised to contribute significantly to the technological advancement of both Delta State and Nigeria.
“The Governor’s Award is a testament to our commitment to promoting science and technology among our youth,” Dr.Odinigwe said. “The winner of this competition will go on to represent Delta State at the federal level. We are determined to provide our young people with the opportunities and resources they need to thrive in a competitive world.”
The commissioner also expressed gratitude to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his unwavering support for science and technology initiatives in Delta State. He attributed the success of the Governor’s Award and other related programs to the administration’s dedication to education and innovation.
In her remarks, the Director of the Science and Technology Department, Mrs. Nkechi Chukwura, described the award as a valuable opportunity for young students aspiring to excel in scientific fields. She explained that the 25 participants would take competitive tests in core science subjects, including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, to determine the winner, who would then represent the state at the federal level. Mrs. Chukwura commended the state government for its commitment to the programme, noting that Delta State has performed exceptionally well since the inception of the initiative. “This program has consistently provided a platform for young talents in Delta to showcase their potential, and we are proud of the results we’ve achieved so far,” she added.
The highlight of the event was the announcement of the competition’s winners and the presentation of awards. Master Daniel Tahrurho of Deeper Life High School, Warri, emerged as the overall winner, while Master Daniel Edowhru of Emore Grammar School, Oleh, took second place, and Miss Favour Samuel of Peniel Academy, Agbor, secured third place.
