The Delta State Government has launched a drug abuse sensitization program in secondary schools across the state’s three senatorial districts.
This announcement was made by the Director-General of the Delta State Orientation and Communication Bureau, Dr. Fred Oghenesivbe, during a courtesy visit to the State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), in Asaba, Tuesday.
Dr. Oghenesivbe explained that the program seeks to address the growing issue of drug abuse among secondary school students in Delta State. He stated: “We are looking to collaborate with the NYSC because corps members are strategically placed in various communities and have direct access to students. This partnership will enable us to reach a wider audience and effectively spread the message of drug abuse prevention.”
“From our research, we found that drug use often begins in secondary schools and is only further expanded at the higher institution level,” Dr. Oghenesivbe noted.
He continued: “We want to follow the example of some corps members who organized an essay competition and drama on drug abuse in schools, rewarding winners to encourage participation. By working with corps members to engage students in various schools, we aim to curb the increasing menace of substance abuse by equipping students with knowledge and providing them with positive role models.”
He stressed that the sensitization program is crucial as it aims to reduce substance abuse among young people, steering students away from the dangers of drugs and toward healthier choices. “This initiative is about giving students the information and guidance they need to make positive decisions,” Dr. Oghenesivbe added.
Dr. Oghenesivbe emphasized that the Bureau’s partnership with the NYSC is essential to the program’s success, as NYSC corps members, embedded in communities across Delta State, will help amplify the program’s message and encourage students to critically assess the risks of drug abuse.
The program, which is set to be launched soon, is expected to make a substantial impact, raising awareness about drug-related issues and reducing the prevalence of drug abuse among students in Delta State.
In his remarks, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. Alao Olusegun described the meeting as an important step toward building a safer, healthier society.
“Our corps members, posted across the federation, will be key in reorienting communities and reinforcing the government’s values,” he said.
Mr. Olusegun commended Dr. Oghenesivbe and the Delta State Orientation and Communication Bureau, noting that this partnership will benefit corps members as they become role models for younger generations, instilling values that will shape their future leadership roles.
