DTSG Plans Low-Cost Housing For Civil Servants, Students

BY ANDREW IKEHI

The Delta State Government (DTSG) says it is working assiduously towards addressing the accommodation challenge currently confronting civil servants and students in the State-owned tertiary institutions.

To address this, the State Government said efforts are in top gear for the ‘massive’ construction of “Oborevwori Hostels” across the various campuses in the State.

The Commissioner for Housing, Mr Godknows Angele disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Asaba, the State capital shortly after appearing before the Delta State House of Assembly on Housing, Women Affairs/Girl Child Entrepreneur and Humanitarian Support Services for the Defence of the Ministry’s 2025 budget, said that plans were also in the offing for the establishment of low-cost housing across the various local government areas of the state.

This, the commissioner said, would help in mitigating the accommodation challenge currently being faced by residents, particularly the vulnerable ones in the State.

Earlier in his presentation before members of the State House of Assembly committee on Housing, Women Affairs/Girl Child Entrepreneur and Humanitarian Support Services, he said that the ministry was proposing N15.5bn in the 2025 fiscal year.

According to Angele, while N14.9bn is being proposed for capital expenditure in the 2025 fiscal year, N575.2m is being proposed for recurrent expenditure.

The commissioner noted that the proposed budget for the 2025 fiscal year is a little above the approved budget of the outgoing year, adding that in the 2024 fiscal year, the sum of N14.7bn was approved Capital budget for the ministry.

Responding, the Chairman of Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Housing, Women Affairs/Girl Child Entrepreneur and Humanitarian Support Services, Hon. Bridget Anyafulu enjoined the ministry to step up action towards addressing the accommodation challenge currently confronting residents in the State, particularly the vulnerable.

She said that the charge had become necessary given the current economic challenge in the country which she noted is already forcing most residents homeless.

Hon. Anyafulu also enjoined the ministry to strengthen its partnership with the organised private sector towards addressing the accommodation needs of residents in the State.

The lawmakers promised to strengthen its collaboration with the ministry towards achieving the desired results.
