DTSG To People In Flood Prone Areas: Don’t Wait, Move To Higher Ground Now

  • Relief Efforts Underway –Osuoza

Delta State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza has urged residents in flood-prone areas to relocate to higher ground in the interim, as the state government initiates measures of relief.

Dr. Osuoza’s appeal follows the 2024 flood prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), saying it underscores the state government’s proactive measures to mitigate the impact of the impending floods on residents.

In a chat with The Pointer yesterday in Asaba, the state government’s spokesperson hinted that the Flood Management Committee would soon submit its recommendations to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

‘’In the interim, those living in flood-prone areas should start making arrangements to vacate to the uplands so that even if the floods come, the damage will not be severe. Relocate to uplands now’’, he said

A member of the committee, the Information Commissioner emphasized the need for Deltans to adopt better environmental practices and keep their surroundings clean to avert disasters, such as floods.

“Our people should begin to take responsibility for their environment. People should stop throwing things out of their vehicles into our drains because the drains are not refuse dumps. Some people, because they have refused to pay the PSPs, dump their waste into the drains whenever they see that it wants to rain. This is wrong’’ he said.

He further emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration between the Waste Management Board, the Taskforce on Environment, and the Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency to effectively implement the MORE Agenda related to environmental issues.

Recall that NiMET had predicted heavy rainfall in 13 states of the federation including Delta, warning of potential flashfloods on roads, bridges, and low-lying areas that could disrupt vehicular movements.

Recognizing the importance of timely and coordinated efforts in managing natural disasters, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori constituted the flood management committee to propose measures for the prevention and management of floods.
