the Nigeria Police Force has apprehended two political thugs and recovered firearms during overnight raids in Edo State, as part of efforts to prevent electoral violence ahead of the gubernatorial election.
The suspects, Edwin Obanor (43) and Audu Tajudeen (41) were arrested following a tip-off. Reports indicated that certain individuals were armed with the intent to cause mayhem and disrupt the election which took place yesterday.
Obanor, who is alleged to be the leader of an armed group, was arrested at Oredo Ward 4 around 9 PM. A search of his belongings led to the discovery of three cut-to-size locally fabricated pistols. Tajudeen was arrested in Igara Akoko, Edo, on the eve of the election, with a locally-made firearm in his possession.
The arrests highlight the Nigeria Police Force’s determination to maintain law and order during the election. In a statement, the Force reiterated that security agencies will not tolerate violence or disruption. The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to face prosecution. The Force called on citizens to cooperate by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station or using the available helplines.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, urged the public to remain calm and assured that the police are committed to safeguarding lives and property during the election process.
