Esenwah Launches Coconut Green Revolution In Oshimili North

By Rita Oyiboka

In a bid to revolutionize agriculture and economic development in Oshimili North Local Government Area, the member representing the constituency, Hon. Frank has launched the Coconut Green Revolution.

The initiative which started in Illah and recently launched in Ugbolu, aims to spread through the communities in the Oshimili North Local Government of Delta State, empowering farmers, improving livelihoods, and boosting the local economy.

Speaking at the launch of the initiative in Ugbolu recently, Hon. Esenwah conveyed that the project will begin with 150 coconut trees in the community to reach over 10000 trees within the next five years. “The coconut green revolution represents a major milestone in our pursuit of wealth creation and sustainable farming. Unlike typical empowerment programs with vehicles that depreciate over time, we are dedicated to establishing Oshimili North as a centre of agricultural excellence focused on exporting coconuts.

“Although we are initiating this project with 150 trees in this community, our ultimate objective is to cultivate tens of thousands of coconut trees across Oshmilli North, and eventually establish coconut processing companies within the local government,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Resource Person at the event, the manager for Delta State Coconut Program, Mr. Eugene Nwaedozie, emphasized the importance of coconut farming, highlighting its numerous benefits, including income generation, food security, and environmental sustainability. “Coconut is a versatile crop with multiple uses, from food to medicine, cosmetics, and industrial applications,” he said.

Representing the Ugbolu community, the President General of the community, Mr Tony Udezue expressed gratitude to Hon. Esenwah for bringing the initiative to their doorstep. “We are eager to embrace this revolution, which will undoubtedly transform our lives and our community. We pledge our full support and cooperation.”

The event featured a demonstration of coconut planting and distribution of coconut seedlings to indigenes. Esenwah assured the community of his continued support, promising to attract more resources and partnerships to sustain the revolution
