Ewulu Crisis: Drama As Family Of Slain Youth Demands Justice

BY AWELE OGBOGU

THERE was a mild drama at the Nsukwa police station as the family of Mr. Ezimechine Agenu, a father of four, who was shot dead by suspected hoodlums during a protest in Ewulu, Aniocha South Local Governemnt Area, on September 30, kicked against the decision to allow those invited over the matter to leave the station.

Brother-in-law to the deceased, Mr. Augustine Igbadi told The Pointer in a telephone conversation over the weekend that “the police in Nsukwa had invited both parties to the station, but to our surprise, after a little while, those mentioned in the case were allowed to go”. “My wife, an elder sister to the deceased therefore erupted in a rage, saying that as a security personnel, she has the right to carry out their arrest”, Igbadi said.

He said the family is worried that those whose names were mentioned over Agenu’s killing have continued to walk free. “We were told to initiate the complaint at the Nsukwa Police Division who will then transfer it to the police headquarters as the killing had occurred under their jurisdiction”, he said, adding that “our hope of getting justice for late Ezimechine Agenu was dashed after they were asked to go.”

Igbadi said after the incidence in Nsukwa, “a few days ago, we were invited to Asaba, but this time, I and my wife were asked to leave, so we don’t know if they were arrested or also allowed to go”, adding that the family’s wish is for late Ezimechine Agenu to get justice without further delay.
