External Invigilator Condemns Misconduct During NECO Exams

BY Elizabeth Oduje

AN external invigilator in one of the private Schools in Asaba, the Delta State Capital, Mrs. Helen Agbateh has expressed dismay at teachers of the school for attempting to instruct students on what to write during the National Examination Council (NECO) exams.

She voiced her concerns during an interview with our correspondent, who monitored the examination in various centers in Asaba, the State Capital.

According to Mrs. Agbate, it is appalling to see teachers forcing their way into the examination hall to provide answers to their students. “This shows that our system is deteriorating and going down the drain,” she remarked.

Mrs. Agbate also noted the low turnout of candidates, attributing it to the financial strain on parents, who cannot afford the costs of both the recently concluded Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) and the ongoing NECO exams.

In contrast, Mr. Ogum Chukwudi, a supervisor at Niger Mixed Secondary School, expressed satisfaction with the improvement in the number of enrollees for the NECO examination, especially in government schools.

“There has been an improvement in the number of candidates sitting for this year’s NECO exam compared to previous years,” he said, applauding the efforts of teachers who are providing extra classes for their students.

Mr. Chukwudi also expressed his satisfaction with the smooth conduct of the examination, noting the absence of major challenges.

Meanwhile, candidates who sat for the examination, expressed confidence in their preparedness, with many hoping to excel in the exams.

Schools visited include Niger Mixed Secondary School, Word of Faith Group of Schools, West-End Mixed Secondary School, Government Model Secondary School, and Wisdom Group of Schools, among others.
