Eye Tattoo: Fashion Gone Crazy

Tattoo in general sense is not new. Some people wear tattoo in different parts of the body for different reasons. Some tattoo their legs, hands, waist, buttocks and now the eyes.

Tattoo is a form of body modification made by inserting tattoo ink, dyes and pigments made indelible into the dermis layer of the skin.

While the craze of tattoos on some parts of the body rages, The issue of tattooing a very sensitive part and organ of the body has come up with the tattooing of the eyes.

Yes, recently a Brazilian woman went viral after sharing video footage of herself having her eyeballs tattooed black, prompting outrage with several viewers warning that she could go blind.

Tattoos may be skin deep but their significance sometimes go deeper. Through time and around the world, the reasons for getting tattoos are being highlighted. They include religious purposes, for protection or as a source of power, an indication of group membership, as a status symbol, as an artistic expression, for permanent cosmetics and as an adjunct to reconstructive surgery.

A tattoo can also be described as a permanent mark or design made on ones skin with pigments inserted through pricks into the skin top layer

Experts say that Tattoo has disadvantages and advantages. The disadvantages include that Tattoo breach the skin, which means that skin infection and other skin complications may come up including other allergic reactions.

They also said that Tattoo especially red, green, yellow and the blue dyes can cause allergic reactions such as itchy, rashes at the tattoo site.

Also, it is said that Tattoos can be expensive and getting it done can also be painful. It is also said that Tattoos can fade over time and that one may choose the wrong design at the wrong time at the long run they keep repeating a process.

On the other hand, some people argue that Tattoos can make one look more attractive. Also that it can cover up the skin and increase ones confidence and reduces stress and enhances self esteem.

Thus, for many years, Tattoos were seen as a way of life and of curing diseases, protection against spirits, showing affiliation towards certain groups, tribes and personality traits such as bravely  courage and social status.

According to records, the first evidence of Tattoo dates back to the mummies of Egypt. During that time, the mommies wore simple tattoo which were simple parallel lines on the arms and legs and run below the naval.

Unfortunately, things are no longer done that way again, either by way of wisdom or civilization, tattooing has changed and now the women want to extend tattoo to the eyes. And depending on ones chosen design, a tattoo of the eyes can mean many things and experts say that there are also several ocular pieces including the eye of Horus and the third Eye.

It should be noted that because of the sensitive nature, the is commonly associated with protection, guidance, knowledge and clarity. Yet people have continued to dare and disturb it. And medical experts have advised against eye ball tattooing for cosmetics purposes as they described it as “an extremely dangerous irreversible procedure that can lead to blindness and other potential health risks.

As stated earlier, tattooing is not totally bad. What is however not acceptable is the way fashion seekers are abusing it by taking it too far as to take to the eyes.

A survey shows that some parents have advised their children not to patronize or go for tattoo and that they would regret their actions if they go for it in any guise.

Some parents who spoke to Lifestyle on the issue decried the rising spate of young men and women wearing tattoo on their bodies in the name of fashion.

To those parents, the mention of anything along the lines of getting a tattoo or piercing  invokes  anger on them.

Recently several viewers were stunned by the footage of women  who tattooed their eyes and experts said that they risk going blind. One of the viewers said, “Why? Just why another queried “why ruin your natural beautiful eyes. And another said “Why risk going blind and another said “This is something I will fully never ever understand “stressing that in the past, some women have gone blind through the same procedure.

One Anaya Peterson from Ireland, for example tattooed her eyes Blue, taking inspiration from Australian model, faced some risks and one Amber Luke who was said to have gone blind after she did same procedure and even cried and had blue tears.

The above examples and instances are supposed to serve as lessons to fashion seekers and copycats in this country and in this part of the world and to women in particular who want to wear anything in the name of fashion

It is said that those who have ears let them hear. It is either those who want to add or change their eye ball go blind by so doing or leave it the way God created it. In this era when people want to wear anything in the name of fashion. It is our duty to warn people not to fall victim. Enough is enough of the fashion craze.
