Ezewu Advocates Girls Visibility In STEM At NAGISS Science Competition

THE Honourable Commissioner for Secondary Education in Delta State, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, has urged young girls to embrace opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), emphasizing the importance of self-belief and perseverance.

She made this call while delivering a keynote address at the Nnoli Akpedeye Girls in STEM Scholarship (NAGISS) Science Competition, held at the Multipurpose Hall, NEPL/NDW Estate, Edjeba, Warri. The event, organized by the Compos Mentis Foundation, aims to support and empower young girls in STEM fields.

Mrs. Ezewu commended the foundation for its visionary initiative, describing NAGISS as a catalyst for societal transformation. She highlighted the crucial role of education in national development and praised the program for not only providing scholarships but also mentorship and role models for young girls aspiring to enter STEM careers.

“I am particularly pleased to learn that the first beneficiaries of NAGISS have already gained admission to study engineering at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE),” she said, encouraging students to seize the opportunity and take the program seriously.

Reaffirming the Delta State Government’s commitment to strengthening STEM education under the leadership of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff O. Oborevwori, Mrs. Ezewu assured continued partnerships with organizations like the Compos Mentis Foundation to provide young girls with the necessary resources, mentorship, and support to excel in STEM careers.

Addressing the young participants, she encouraged them to recognize their potential and strive for excellence.

“You are capable. You are brilliant. You are the future. Let this competition be a stepping stone to greater achievements.”

She also called on parents and teachers to nurture the confidence and curiosity of young girls, while urging corporate organizations and stakeholders to invest more in STEM education, particularly for girls.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment to fostering STEM education for young girls, with stakeholders pledging to create more opportunities for them to thrive.
