TO expand its impact on social and economic welfare in Delta State, the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Fostering Hopes Foundation is set to hold a walkathon from Agbor to Asaba on April 5.
Speaking to The Pointer, the foundation’s founder, Nkechi Ukome, highlighted the strides made since its inception in 2024.
“We officially launched last October with three families and 11 children, supporting them to prevent family separation by providing small business grants to parents, helping them expand their ventures and cover their children’s school fees.
“In January 2025, we expanded our reach to six families and 19 children, providing these families with ₦250,000 each and continued covering educational expenses. To promote our work and attract more support, we decided to organise a walkathon,” she explained.
Ukome revealed that preparations for the event have been underway since January. “We have been training with a team of young athletes, so we already have a core group ready for the walk. Those unable to complete the full distance can join us in Asaba for the final 15-kilometre stretch.
“Our walk will conclude at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, where we will hold a small event in the evening. We will recognise participants, appreciate our partners, and discuss the foundation’s mission while engaging with supporters through entertainment and interactions.”
Looking ahead, the foundation aims to expand its reach from six to 50 families between 2025 and 2026. Ukome also disclosed plans to launch a food bank in the second quarter of the year.
“We are still working out the logistics, as we recognise the risk of misuse. It is crucial to ensure that food assistance reaches those who genuinely need it. With adequate support from the government and private sectors, we can realise this vision,” she added.
