THE Founder and President of Morgan Smart Development Foundation, Dr Omawumi Atsiangbe-Urhobo, has said that women in the society have a lot to do in order to achieve gender equality.

Shemade the remarks in her welcome address in Warri during the  celebration of the 2025 UN International Women’s Day, with the theme, “Accelerate Action”. She said that women were still being relegated to the background many years after the famous Beijing Conference.

Dr  Atsiangbe-Urhobo, who is also the President, Omawumi Evelyn Atsiangbe-Urhobo Education Trust Fund said that the  International Women’s Day  is a day set aside by the UN to draw world attention to the plights of women around the World.

“It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to this round table of  TABLE OF women  CSOs and women  influencers, to celebrate the 2025 UN International women’s day with the theme, ‘’Accelerate Action”, she said.

According to her, the UN in 1975 passed a Resolution that recognized March 8th of every year to be celebrated as international women’s Day to draw the attention of the leaders all over the world, to the inequality being suffered by women with a view to getting commitments to redress their status.

“The UN followed this up in 1979, with the exclusive Women Bill of Right called the convention on the Elimination of All Form of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). This was followed by the African Charter on the Right of Women of which Nigeria is a signatory to the Charter”, she said.

Morgan Smart Development Foundation, an NGO dedicated to the economic empowerment of Women in Nigeria with special interest in the Niger Delta,  because of her deep rooted commitment to the amelioration of the poverty of women, has religiously celebrated the international women’s Day for a period spanning over nine (9) years from the year 2015 when she first celebrated the international women’s Day, till the year 2023 when there was a break”, she added.
