IGP Lacks Constitutional Right To Ban The State Security Network —Edo Assembly

By Favour Percy-Idubor/Benin

THE Edo State House of Assembly has said the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun does not have the authority to suspend the Edo State security network.

The House of Assembly emphasized that the network was established according to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

The Majority Leader of the House of Assembly, Hon. Charity Aiguobarueghian in a press conference, held at the Assembly Complex, stressed that the security network will continue to protect the people of Edo State regardless of the IGP pronouncement.

He maintained that members of the network were not going to participate in the election rather they were going to the field to vote like every other voter in the state.

The majority leader lamented that “It is unfortunate that the IGP, who is supposed to maintain law and order in the society is creating tension.  Edo is a peaceful and law abiding state who does not stir up trouble unnecessarily”.

This reaction is coming after the pronouncement of Egbetokun suspending the activities of the Edo State Security Network during the stakeholders meeting organised by Independent National Electoral Commission  (INEC) for the September 21st governorship election.
