Isoko South LGA Pledges Partnership With SURWASH

AS part of efforts towards achieving universal access to clean and safe water for residents, Isoko South Local Government Area has reiterated its commitment to fostering partnerships that will drive positive change in water and sanitation services.

The Chairman, Isoko South Local Government Area, Hon. Friday Warri made this known in Oleh during an advocacy visit by officers of the  State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU) of the  Delta State Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) programme.

He commended the initiative and reaffirmed the council’s commitment to working closely with the SPIU Delta SURWASH programme to ensure improved water and sanitation infrastructure.

The council chairman noted that access to clean water remains a fundamental right and pledged to support ongoing and future projects that would promote water security and public health.

Earlier, the Ag. Programme Coordinator, State Project Implementation Unit, Engr. Clement Adiotomre disclosed that the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the Delta SPIU SURWASH programme and Isoko South Local Government Area to enhance water supply and hygiene services in the communities in the council area.

The coordinator, who was represented by Paula Nwokolo disclosed that part of the reason for their visit was to engage with critical stakeholders, such as representatives of the benefiting communities, officers of the Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) unit in the Council’s Department of Environment, among others with a view to discussing the sustainability of the water projects and also mark the 2025 World Water Day.

Engr. Adiotomre said that the programme was being implemented in six council areas, namely Bomadi; Isoko South; Ndokwa West; Okpe; Ughelli North and Ukwuani where water schemes have been constructed in selected communities, including sanitation facilities in schools, Primary Health Centers, and markets.

“Currently the SURWASH programme has implemented and also completed 17 sub-projects in the council area through the State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) and State Small Town Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (STOWASSA), even as more projects will be implemented.

In the same vein, the SURWASH team engaged with the Secretary to Isoko South Local Government Area, Mr. Osuofa Zino who welcomed them to the local government area and also thanked them for bringing the water projects to the Council area.

He assured the SURWASH team that the council will continue to partner with the programme and will do everything within its capacity to ensure the availability of safe potable water and proper sanitation services in the area.

The advocacy visit coincided with the 2025 World Water Day, with the theme “Glacier Preservation: Impact of Glacier Melting on drinking water, agriculture, clean energy and health ecosystem.
