Martyns Emerges 16th Chairman Of ICAN, Asaba And District Society

  • Promises To Take Cue From National Leadership To Ensure
  •  Accounting Remains Conscience Of Society

A distinguished accountant in the Delta State Civil Service, Mr. Edward Obiefuna Martyns, has added another milestone to his accounting career with his investiture, on Saturday, June 29, as the 16th Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) Asaba & District Society. His first official assignment was to administer the oath of office to the new executive committee members of the district.

He declared in his acceptance speech that “we are expected to take a cue from our national leadership to ensure the accounting profession remains the conscience of society.” The 60th President of ICAN, Davidson Alaribe was represented by a Council member, Lucy Okena.

Martyns specially recognized His Excellency, the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, a distinguished fellow of ICAN, who was ably represented at the occasion, for his “unwavering support for the Asaba District Society and the accounting profession over the years. In the same vein, I also recognize the Chairman of this occasion, Dr. Awa Ibraheem, another distinguished fellow and pillar of the Institute, as well as all our esteemed invited guests, thank you all for your presence here today”, he said.

Martyns, in his acceptance speech promised to pursue a three-point agenda, which are capacity building and professional development of members, membership drive and consolidation on infrastructural development. On the third agenda, he said “we are all aware of the concerted effort of past excos towards the development of our land and a befitting centre/edifice for ICAN Asaba and District Society. It is my desire   that this Exco under my leadership will do all in its power within the limit of available time and resources to ensure significant and tangible progress is made in this regard.”

In her goodwill message to Martyns, Mrs. Joy Enwa, a distinguished fellow of the Institute and Permanent Secretary/Accountant-General of Delta State prayed that God will guide, protect and strengthen the new chairman as he moves the District forward. Also, a former chairman of the district, Mr. Daniel Odeh, among numerous dignitaries wished Martyns a successful tenure.

Earlier, Martyns acknowledged the enormous responsibilities expected of him and his executive committee, but said he is relying on team work to bring the best results. “Beneath the pomp and pageantry of today’s event lays a huge responsibility on us as the new executive committee to pilot the affairs of the District Society for the next 12 months. “I intend to prioritize teamwork with the current Exco, past chairmen, entire members/professional colleagues and relevant stakeholders in the course of the next 12 months.”

Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Awa Ibraheem expressed confidence in Martyns’ ability to lead the organization to greater heights.

Congratulating Martyns, who is also a distinguished Rotarian, Chairman of ANAN, Asaba branch, Mrs. Victoria Oma-Omizu Chukwura wished him well, while praying for wisdom to take the accounting body to greater heights. Also wishing Martyns well was Chairman of Delta State Forum of Accountants, Mr. Charles Isiayei and a host of accounting stakeholders in the state.

Martyns was supported by his wife, Mrs. Juliet Uzonichamaka and others to cut  the investiture cake while he danced with members and guests, including Rotarians who came to felicitate with one of their own.

The newly inaugurated Exco included Mr.. Ogheneriobororue Akiri as vice chairman, Mrs. Onajite Jarikre as vice president, Dcn. Godspower Elumalue, secretary, Mrs. Omoyemi Dede, treasurer, Mr. Ese Agbagbara, financial secretary, Ms Akporedafe Okeoghene Judith, welfare secretary, Mrs. Oghoro Emuesiri, social/publicity secretary, Atokpe Michael as asst. secretary, Mrs. Winifred Enechaziam, membership secretary. Others are Oguntayo Olusola as technical secretary, Mrs. Mary Aganoke, Ex-officio/IPC, Mr. Chukwuedo Ernest, Ex-officio and Mrs. Evelyn Odeh, SWAN representative.

Besides the formal parts of the investiture, members and guests were treated to a great time, with lots of wining and dining to make the occasion a lively one.
