Minimum Wage: We‘re Waiting For FG’S Template –Delta NLC

  • Applauds DTSG’s Moves
  • Proposes Wage Award As ‘Stop-Gap Measure’

BY CLETUS NGWODO

The Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku has advised the state government to resume the payment of wage award to the state’s workforce pending when the issue of minimum wage is sorted out.

Ofobruku, who spoke exclusively to The Pointer, over the telephone yesterday, while reacting to the setting up of a committee by the Delta State Government to hold talks with the state leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress on the implementation of the new minimum wage, appreciated the state government’s genuine effort. He noted, however, that the Federal Government was yet to issue circular on Consequential Adjustment template upon which the discussion on the new minimum could revolve.

The labour leader said that the standard procedure was for the Federal Government to release the template, giving direction and guidelines through circular on the way to follow since labour matter is in the Exclusive list of the nation Constitution.

“While I appreciate His Excellency, the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for his genuine effort at mitigating the pains of Deltans, particularly the workers, let me however, say that we don’t have the template at the moment as you can’t build something on nothing, since the Federal Government is yet to issue circular to that effect,” he said.

“We do know that we are working on the same page, basically for the interest of Delta workers; I will let the Government representatives know about this when we meet.Meanwhile, I want to appeal to workers to exercise patience   while the issue of the new minimum wage is being sorted out”, he added.
