MEMBERS of the Human Rights Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), led by its Chairman, Mrs. Patience Onoriode Onianwa has commended the Chief Judge of Delta State, Hon. Justice Tessy Diai for taking the judiciary to a higher level in the state.
The Human Rights body of NBA which participated in the just-concluded last quarter of the 2024 visits to correctional centres in the state said Justice Diai’s passion for excellence and hardwork has kept the judicial system in the state working smoothly.
She said that all judges and magistrates should work round the clock for speedy trials of all cases brought before them in various courts. Onianwa revealed that, in all the correctional centres they visited in Delta State, cases were moving rapidly as against what was observed in the past, where inmates’ cases lasted for years before final judgement.
She told newsmen that, during the visit, that five inmates were released at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre by the Chief Judge at the instance of the State’s DPP who said that they have no cases to answer.
The visit of members of the Human Rights Committee, who were accompanied by the NBA, Asaba branch chairman, A.P Maduemezie Esq. to the correctional centre, was to intimate themselves of the activities there.
The visit was in preparation for the Human Rights 16 days of activities which will soon commence in full swing in Asaba. The Chief Judge of the state stated at the end of the exercise, that they reviewed a total of 1,288 warrants where an inmate was released at warri and Kwale correctional centres respectively, while five inmates were released at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre, making a total of seven in all. She commended those who participated in the exercise for doing a good job and making the exercise possible.
The CJ added that she is happy to observe that there are a lot of improvements in the overall exercise, just as she commended the DPP and his team for their diligence during the exercise.
