NGO Condemns Surge In ‘Penis Theft’ Allegations

…Calls For Public Awareness

BY RITA OYIBOKA

THE Director of the Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AfAW), Dr. Leo Igwe has expressed concern over the rising cases of alleged penis thefts, describing them as dangerous superstitions fuelling mob violence and social unrest.

In an exclusive interview with The Pointer, Dr. Igwe criticised what he called “a worrying resurgence” of irrational beliefs across Nigeria, warning that unchecked rumours were endangering innocent lives.

“People are going about saying their penises disappeared. Let’s be clear, penises don’t vanish into thin air. These are false alarms and accusations. But if not properly managed, someone could end up dead,” he said.

Dr. Igwe, a human rights advocate, and researcher, said the phenomenon was not new but has become more prevalent in recent times, especially in urban centres.

He pointed out that such accusations were often levelled against the vulnerable, children, women, persons with disabilities, and the poor, adding: “This is exactly why I started Advocacy for Alleged Witches to stand up for the accused, most of whom are completely innocent.”

The organisation, according to him, works closely with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), the Police, and local journalists to investigate and debunk false claims before they escalate into violence.

Citing a recent case, Dr. Igwe revealed how a man accused of having his penis stolen was taken to a police station, where a female officer conducted a physical examination.

“She checked. The penis was intact, and the man even had an erection. Yet before that, people were already gathering with stones and sticks,” he said.

Dr. Igwe also placed part of the blame on the media, criticising sensational headlines like “Witch Crash-Lands” for reinforcing irrational beliefs. He called for more responsible reporting and encouraged journalists to engage critically, highlighting that the media can also be a strong force for change.

The advocate further urged the public to abandon these harmful beliefs and embrace rational thinking, education, and due process, stressing that until the root causes of such superstitions are addressed, the country risks further descent into fear-driven violence and lawlessness.
