Delta State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Daniel Odinigwe has called on stakeholders across the state to ensure that the benefits of scientific advancements are accessible to all.
Odinigwe made the appeal during the 2024 World Science Day for Peace and Development, held at the Chike Edozien State Secretariat in Asaba.
He highlighted this year’s theme, “Global Science for Global Well-being,” while speaking on the crucial role of science in society and the importance of engaging the public in discussions on emerging scientific issues. “This theme underlines the significance of science in our daily lives and the need to involve the wider public in understanding its impact,” he said.
Odinigwe noted that in 2024, the World Science Day celebration aims to enhance scientific literacy and provide communities with the resources to understand and apply scientific principles in everyday life. He stressed the goal of bridging the gap between science and society to make scientific knowledge more accessible, relevant, and beneficial for all citizens of Delta State.
“Science is a powerful catalyst for progress and innovation,” Dr. Odinigwe stated, “driving solutions that improve the wellbeing of individuals and communities.” He urged that science not be confined to laboratories or academic journals, but rather reach the public to foster development at all levels.
He also acknowledged the dedication of scientists and researchers whose work pushes the boundaries of knowledge and inspires excellence across fields.
He encouraged stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue and collaboration to use science as a tool for creating a healthier, more equitable world.
Odinigwe urged participants to leverage the power of science to address social, environmental, and economic challenges. In her remarks, Professor Kate Iloba, a Professor of Hydrobiology and Fisheries at Delta State University, Abraka, stated that science has transformed our world, fostering peace and cooperation.
Professor Iloba noted that continued scientific advancement is essential for addressing global challenges and promoting a more peaceful and prosperous future.
