Onitsha Kingdom Demands Justice For Slain Lawmaker

BETI ONU AWKA

The Royal Cabinet of Onitsha kingdom has expressed concern over the inadequate police response to the kidnapping and murder of former Anambra State House of Assembly member,  Hon. Justice Azuka, urging immediate reforms in the investigation process.

In a letter addressed to Inspector-General of Police Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, the monarch’s council highlighted troubling moral questions regarding the escape of two suspects from police custody.

They expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing investigation and urged for a thorough review to restore community confidence in local security measures.

After a meeting presided over by the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe Agbaogidi, the council stated, “Given the unsatisfactory manner in which this high-profile case has been handled, we respectfully call on the Inspector General of Police to take over the case from the State Command.”

The cabinet also implored the Anambra State Government to reaffirm its commitment to justice and called on the State House of Assembly to ensure accountability in the case, stating, “We all feel endangered.”

In response to community concerns, the Anambra State Police Command denied allegations that seven suspects in custody had died of tetanus from bullet wounds.

Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochikwu Ikenga confirmed that the command accepts responsibility for any operational lapses and is committed to re-arresting the two fleeing suspects.

“We will not rest until the suspects are brought to justice,” Ikenga affrimed.

He reassured the public of ongoing security measures aimed at enhancing safety in the state and emphasised the importance of impartiality in the investigation process to uphold justice.
