THE Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta, has donated items worth millions of naira to three selected primary schools in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The Executive Officer of the NNS Delta, Navy Capt. Solomon Paul led navy personnel to donate the items on behalf of Commodore Abba Muhsin, the Commander, NNS Delta.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the beneficiaries include; Olodi Primary School, Cavegina Primary School and Ojojo Primary School all in Warri South.
Addressing newsmen at the end of the exercise, Muhsin said the gesture was in line with the Operation Delta Sanity toward stemming illegalities in the maritime space
“In line with Operation Delta Sanity, an anti-crude oil operation was launched by the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) in January 2024.
“The Nigerian Navy directed all units under Operation Delta Sanity to also include some non-kinetic approaches in the fight against illegalities in our waters.
“Today, NNS Delta chose to conduct Educational Rhapsody.
“We took time to identify some schools in our immediate environment and asked the schools for their immediate needs before taken further steps to address them,” Muhsin said.
He listed the items donated to include submersible pumping machines, slasher machines, overhead tanks, generating sets, jacking water pump, large quantity of exercise books for pupils and jotters for teachers.
He described the donation as part of the NNS Delta contribution to learning in its immediate host communities and urged the teachers to ensure the pupils excelled.
“That is why in those exercise books, we itemised crimes within the society that will keep ringing in the heads of the pupils.
“When they keep reading, they will stay away from kidnapping, drug abuse, cultism, stealing and be of good behavior,” he said.
Muhsin, however, urged the pupils to study hard and become useful to their parents and society.
In a remark, Dr. Ejiro Kelvin, from the Warri South LG Education Authority, thanked the NNS Delta for the donation, describing the gesture as “very laudable”.
Kelvin said: “We are proud to see this kind of thing coming to our schools. “Other NGOs, groups and public-spirited individuals should emulate the Navy to address some of the challenges in our public schools. “Government alone cannot do it. By partnering with other organisations, things will be better.
“All social vices going on in the country can be captured in the primary schools.
“I thank NNS Delta for the kind gesture they extended to our schools,” Kelvin further said.
Also, the Head Teacher, Olodi Primary School, Mrs. Cecilia Uwarebaye, thanked the NNS Delta for the donation and promised that the teachers would give the pupils the best.
“I am overwhelmed as the head of this school. I thank the NNS Delta for choosing our school among the beneficiaries.
“The teachers will not teach the pupils what is not good for them.
“The children should go home with something that will better their future,” she said.
A pupil at Ojojo Primary School, Miss Mary Praise, who spoke on behalf of her co-students, thanked the NNS Delta for the donation.
Praise said that she had learnt that cultism, kidnapping, drug abuse and other crimes, captured in the exercise books, are bad. (NAN)
