By Jumai Nwachukwu

His Royal Majesty, Major General Felix Mujakperuo (Rtd.), Orhue I, the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, is a name synonymous with integrity, leadership, and dedication to the well-being of his people and the nation. Appointed as the Chairman of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers in January 2022, he has continued to exemplify the values of a distinguished statesman and visionary leader. As he receives yet another accolade in recognition of his contributions, it is fitting to reflect on his early life, illustrious career, and his monumental achievements both in military service and as a traditional ruler.

Early Life and Education:

Born on December 4, 1946, in Opuraja, Okpe Kingdom, Delta State, Major General Mujakperuo’s journey began with a solid educational foundation. He attended Urhobo College in Effurun, Delta State, before enrolling in the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), where he began his military training in 1968. His quest for knowledge continued throughout his life, with further studies at the University of Lagos, the Nigerian Law School, and prestigious military institutions around the world, including the Judge Advocate-General’s School in the United States.

Distinguished Military Career

Major General Mujakperuo’s military career is nothing short of stellar. His service in the Nigerian Army spanned numerous command positions and international assignments. He participated in peacekeeping missions with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon and held critical roles within the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG). His leadership skills shone through as Commander of the Nigerian Army Military Police, Director of Army Legal Services, and General Officer Commanding two divisions of the Nigerian Army. His unwavering commitment to national service earned him numerous decorations, including the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), the United Nations Medal, and the ECOMOG Medal.

Ascending the Throne

In July 2006, Major General Mujakperuo retired from the military to ascend the throne of his ancestors as the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom. His coronation was a grand event, attended by prominent figures from all walks of life, reflecting the deep respect and admiration he commands. Since becoming Orhue I, he has worked tirelessly to foster peace, unity, and development within Okpe Kingdom, while also representing his people on the national stage.

Contributions as Orodje of Okpe

As Orodje, His Majesty has demonstrated a deep commitment to the welfare of his people, addressing key issues such as education, economic empowerment, and infrastructure development. He has been an outspoken advocate for better employment opportunities for Okpe graduates, urging local companies like Seplat Development Company to improve their hiring practices for indigenous youth. Although he has commended the company’s efforts in building schools and promoting community development, he has been vocal about the need for more job opportunities for his people, expressing frustration at the sight of university graduates being forced to take on menial jobs.

A Visionary Monarch

Under his leadership, Okpe Kingdom has witnessed significant progress, and his efforts have not gone unnoticed. His appointment as the Chancellor of the Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB) is a testament to his integrity and contributions to nation-building. The conferment of an honorary Doctorate of Laws (LL.D) by the university is further recognition of his legacy of service, both as a military officer and as a traditional ruler.

Leadership Beyond the Throne

As Chairman of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers, the Orodje of Okpe continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of traditional institutions in Delta State. His leadership in this capacity is defined by a deep sense of dignity, wisdom, and respect for the cultural values that bind the people of Delta State. He is known for his reserved demeanour, rarely seen at public functions, a testament to his belief in the dignity of traditional rulers.

Conclusion

Major General Mujakperuo’s life is one of remarkable achievements, whether in the military, law, or traditional leadership. His unwavering dedication to his people, his kingdom, and his nation has earned him widespread admiration. As he continues to lead the Okpe people and contribute to the advancement of Delta State, his legacy as a patriotic Nigerian and a visionary monarch will undoubtedly endure for generations to come.
