Defending champions of the 2023 Cecilia Omo-Agege Memorial Football Tournament, Ovara, were at the end of a 4-0 thrashing by Otorho as this year’s edition of the annual competition got underway on Friday.
The tournament, held annually in honour of the late Mrs Cecilia Omo-Agege, is a celebration of community, unity, and sporting excellence. It brings together teams from Orogun and neighbouring villages in a bid to discover exceptional football talent and strengthen communal bonds.
Speaking about the tournament, its organiser, Mr Jimmy Omo-Agege, Chairman of Zane Energy Limited, stated, “The tournament is a testament to the enduring legacy of a remarkable woman. Through this tournament, we aim to bring together communities, foster unity, and discover exceptional football talents within and around Orogun communities. It is a tournament where unity, talent, and legacy come alive.”
This year’s edition features 12 teams divided into three groups, with matches scheduled to run from Friday, 13th December 2024, until shortly after Christmas.
Today’s fixtures promise more excitement as Orhoerha takes on Oyuobru/Idjere by 9 AM, followed by Imodje facing Sanubi at noon. The defending champions Ovara will look to bounce back when they square off against Ebor in the final match of the day.
The competition offers ₦800,000 to the winners, ₦500,000 to the runners-up, and ₦300,000 to the third-place finishers, ensuring fierce competition as the tournament progresses.
