To safeguard the lives of pregnant women and unborn babies, the Director General of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC), Dr. Isaac Akpoveta has revealed that over 300 caesarien sections are conducted monthly under the commission’s auspices.
He made this statement, on thursday, during an exclusive interview with The Pointer in his office in Asaba, Delta State.
According to Dr. Akpoveta, over 2.4 million Deltans have been enrolled in the scheme, including children and pregnant women, who benefited from the over 300 C-sections conducted monthly in medical facilities registered under the state commission.
“Pregnancy i s both a significant and dangerous time for a woman, and the state government recognises this, hence their intervention through the scheme,” he said.
He also highlighted the scheme’s provisions for children under five, who are prone to convulsions and other ailments, ensuring their medical care. Dr. Akpoveta emphasized the commission’s commitment to individuals in rural and hard-to-reach areas of the state.
“A major agenda of the commission is to make provisions where there are no health facilities, especially in hard-to-reach areas. We realised some organizations have built hospitals in these areas that have since become rundown. “The commission initiated the Access to Finance Initiative in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), and Bank of Industry, among others, to pool funds and revive these facilities, and it has been a success,” he said.
Conveying that the scheme covers eight per cent of the health needs of individuals insured under it, Dr. Akpoveta called on Deltans to be aware of the medical services provided by the scheme.
He assured that the commission is open to all complaints by enrolles and also appealed to all registered medical facilities to adhere to the guidelines provided by the scheme, warning that any facility failing to provide quality healthcare as stipulated by the state government will be penalized.
