An 18-year-old boy, Chinedu Abimbor was allegedly shot dead by police officers at a checkpoint in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
The tragic incident led to widespread outrage as youths and the victim’s family took to the streets demanding justice.
Reports indicate that Chinedu was driving a Mercedes-Benz when he was flagged down by officers. However, upon refusing to stop, one of the policemen allegedly opened fire, killing him instantly.
Eyewitnesses claim that Chinedu’s younger brother, who was in the car, was arrested and taken into custody. In response, angry youths staged protests on Thursday, marching to the palace of the traditional ruler of Ekpoma, HRH Anthony Ehizogie Abumere II, to demand justice and the release of the deceased’s brother.
One of the protesters, Lucky Adaba accused the police of routinely harassing young men driving cars in the area. “We went to the police station to ask why Chinedu was killed, but instead of answers, we were tear-gassed and shot at,” he said.
Reacting to the incident, the Edo State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation. In a statement issued over the weekend, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu confirmed that the shooting involved a joint security operation.
The Commissioner of Police, Betty Otimenyin has since ordered the immediate withdrawal of the three patrol teams involved, assuring the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted and justice served.
