The bad state of highways in most parts of the country, as well as the lack of technological solutions in road traffic management in Nigeria have been identified as some of the factors militating against accident-free roads in the country.
Speaking when he received the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and his team on a courtesy visit to his office in Asaba on Tuesday, the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza lamented the state of roads in the country, a situation which he said was a major factor In road crashes.
While commending the efforts of the FRSC in reducing road carnages through their enforcement activities, the Commissioner advised the Commission to adopt technological solutions such as employing speed radars and speed cameras at strategic points in highways in order to electronically document cases of dangerous driving for prosecution.
Osuoza expressed the ministry’s willingness to collaborate with the FRSC in sensitizing the public on safe driving habits. He stressed that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was concerned about the state of roads in the state, especially federal roads, urging the Sector Commander to furnish the state government with locations of roads that were accident-prone across the state, as part of the Commission’s road audit function.
Earlier, the 21st Sector Commander of the RS 5.2, Delta State command, Corps Commander Muftau Irekiola, identified the three basic functions of the commission as ensuring the safety of highways for road users, carrying out research on causes of road rashes with a view to finding solutions, and sensitizing the public on the proper use of roads.
He appealed for assistance and cooperation from the ministry in the area of sensitization to ensure that citizens imbibe a good road safety culture.
