Ramadan: Tinubu Urges Prayers For Nigeria

PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has extended greetings to Muslims in Nigeria and across the globe following the sighting of the crescent moon that marks the beginning of Ramadan.

The moon was spotted in several countries, including Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, with the first day of fasting set for Saturday, 1 March.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu urged Muslims to embrace the core values of piety, humility, and selflessness that characterise this holy month.

“Let us use this period to strengthen our bonds with Allah and one another, fostering unity and peace in our communities,” he said.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed by Muslims worldwide as a time for fasting, prayer, reflection, and charitable acts.

Fasting during Ramadan, one of the five pillars of Islam involves abstaining from food, drink, and sexual relations from dawn until dusk for 29 or 30 days, depending on the sighting of the new crescent.

In his statement, President Tinubu highlighted Ramadan as a season of spiritual rejuvenation, self-discipline, and empathy for those in need.

“This month is an opportunity for deep reflection, renewed devotion to Allah, and acts of compassion and generosity toward humanity,” he stated.

He expressed gratitude to Allah for allowing the nation to witness the commencement of this significant period.

The President noted that this year’s Ramadan is especially meaningful as it coincides with a “period of renewed hope and progress” for Nigeria.

He pointed out that his administration’s bold and transformative policies are beginning to yield positive results, reflected in the gradual stabilisation of the economy.

“The Gross Domestic Product for the last quarter of 2024 has shown marked improvement compared to the same period in 2023. Prices of essential food items are declining, providing much-needed relief to our fasting population. The exchange rate is stabilising, and fuel prices are decreasing, signalling a brighter future,” he said.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to boosting agricultural productivity and enhancing food security.

“We are dedicated to improving food production and ensuring self-sufficiency for all Nigerians through targeted support, mechanisation, and innovative farming initiatives. Our resolve to build a resilient and prosperous nation remains unwavering,” he stated.

He encouraged all Nigerians to join in prayer and action for the country’s continued growth and development. “Let us fervently seek Allah’s guidance and protection for our nation, and let our words and deeds reflect our shared commitment to peace, unity, and progress.”

Additionally, President Tinubu extended his best wishes to all Muslims observing Ramadan, wishing them a month filled with joy, peace, and spiritual renewal. “May the blessings of this holy month illuminate our hearts and homes, and may we emerge from it as better individuals and a stronger nation.”
