The House of Representatives has urged the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to ensure the enforcement of its directive on meter replacement at no cost to the consumer.
The call followed the adoption of a motion moved by the member representing the Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi at Wednesday’s plenary.
The House mandated its Committee on Power to investigate Distribution Companies (DisCos) non-compliance and assess consumers’ contributions to repairs
It called on the Federal Ministry of Power to prioritize the funding of electricity infrastructure upgrade and directed DisCos to adopt a transparent system of meter upgrades with penalties for non-compliance
Earlier, while moving the motion, Hon Ezechi said it was intended to address the ongoing metering crisis and related challenges in Nigeria’s electricity distribution sector
He added that the motion underscored the failure of Distribution Companies (DisCos) to replace obsolete meters, as mandated by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), and the financial burdens placed on electricity consumers due to inadequate infrastructure.
Hon. Ezechi emphasized the need for transparency and efficiency in the electricity sector, expressing the hope that the resolutions would lead to significant improvements for electricity consumers nationwide.
