Rotary Club Of Asaba Donates Medical Equipment To Nsukwa PHC

BY RITA OYIBOKA

The Rotary Club of Asaba has donated essential medical equipment to the Primary Health Centre in Nsukwa, Aniocha South Local Government Area, Delta State, to enhance maternal and child healthcare services in the community.

The initiative, carried out under a district grant project of Rotary District 9141, provided critical medical supplies, including a delivery bed and sets, artery forceps, a foetal Doppler, a blood pressure apparatus, and a circumcision set.

Speaking at the handover ceremony yesterday, the president of the club, Rotarian (Dr). Henry Iwelu, emphasised that the donation aligns with Rotary’s core focus on maternal and child health.

“This gesture is purely driven by the need to do good, as Rotarians are known for. After conducting a feasibility study in Nsukwa, we discovered that the health centre lacked essential facilities such as a delivery bed and other critical equipment.

“We felt strongly that a community of this size should not be without these basic necessities. This project is funded through a district grant under Rotary District 9141, to which the Rotary Club of Asaba belongs,” he said.

Rtn. Iwelu further highlighted the impact of the initiative, noting that the entire Nsukwa community, especially expectant mothers, would benefit.

“Previously, deliveries were taking place here without adequate facilities. But now, with these new provisions, mothers can safely and properly deliver their babies within the community. Additionally, neighbouring communities will also benefit from this initiative, ensuring broader access to better healthcare services,” he added.

The facility’s matron, Marian Obuma, expressed profound gratitude for the donation, describing it as a long-overdue intervention.

“We are truly grateful for this donation to the Nsukwa health facility. Previously, we had a delivery bed, but it was in such poor condition that it had to be removed. Just last week, we had four deliveries on a regular couch, which we’ve been using for years. I urge other organisations to follow the example of the Rotary Club by supporting small health centres like ours.”

Earlier, delegates from the Rotary Club of Asaba paid a courtesy visit to the Obi of Nsukwa, HRM (Dr). Kenneth Ezegbunem, who commended the club’s efforts.

“Health is wealth, and I applaud the Rotary Club for investing in the maternal health of Nsukwa. This has been a serious problem in the community, as many women in labour have had to be rushed to Asaba, Ogwashi-Uku, and other places. But now that these medical instruments have been provided here, there is no need for that anymore,” he said.
