THE people of Oko-Odifulu community in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State would eternally be grateful to the Rotary Club of Asaba, District 9141, and its partner, Rotary Club of Nanaimo Daybreak District 5020, Canada. They expressed their profound gratitude during the commissioning of the potable water supply in the community, a project that marked the culmination of Rtn Solomon Ehikwe’s tenure as President of the Rotary Club of Asaba.
During the ceremony, Rtn Ehikwe said the project was inspired by the absence of clean, safe drinking water in the community, even as he expressed gratitude to the Rotary Club of Nanaimo Daybreak Canada for their support in ensuring that the project became a reality.
While underscoring the importance of water to life’s sustenance, Rtn Ehikwe charged the people of Oko-Odifulu to own the project and its accompanying accessories (a generator set) and ensure that it stands the test of time.
He said the club, during his tenure as president, carried out several projects in line with the focus areas of Rotary International which includes the donation of hospital equipment to the government hospital in Ibusa and a library at Oko-Amakom Secondary School.
Other projects initiated and executed by the Rotary Club of Asaba during Ehikwe’s presidency include the provision of cleaning equipment for the Federal Medical Centre Asaba, as well as the donation of schoolbags, books and uniforms to some schools at Mbiri in Ika North-East Local Government Area, among others.
Addressing journalists, the Zone 22 Assistant Governor of Rotary Club, Rtn Peter Itawansa, commended Rt Ehikwe for reaching enviable milestones during his tenure as president.
Some elders in the community who spoke to The Pointer including Chief Michael Onwuyalu and Chief Joseph Nonyeli did not hold back their blessings for members of the Rotary Club of Asaba and the Rotary Club of Nanaimo Daybreak for the water project in their community.
One of the women leaders who spoke to journalists, Mrs Josephine Ikedi, showered blessings on both the Rotary Club of Asaba and the Rotary Club of Nanaimo Daybreak for the intervention to ameliorate their plight.
She said that the potable water project has eased their difficulty in sourcing drinkable water, even as she recalled that before the project, they sourced water from the River Niger, climbing rocky terrains.
In the same vein, some of the youths, including Mr Precious Ikedi the Youth President of Oko-Odifulu and Mr Christopher Odunze appreciated their benefactors, promising that they would put the project to optimal use and secure it from vandalism.
