Residents of Sapele in Delta State have expressed frustration over the skyrocketing cost of food items, attributing the hike to the prevailing insecurity in the country.
Speaking at the Sapele Main Market, Mrs. Akpobomie, a trader in the market, said that “the constant attacks on farmers and transporters by armed robbers and herdsmen have led to a significant decrease in food supply, resulting in higher prices. “Farmers are afraid to go to their farms due to fear of being attacked, and those who manage to cultivate crops struggle to transport them to the market because of the danger on the roads.”
She lamented that the prices of staple foods like rice, beans and maize have increased by over 50% in the past few months, making it difficult for traders to make ends meet.
Another trader who spoke to newsmen and gave his name as Francis, added that the situation had also led to a shortage of fresh produce, as many farmers had abandoned their farms due to the insecurity.
He urged the federal government to address the security challenges facing farmers and Ttraders in the country, noting that the high cost of food items was affecting not only their businesses but also the general well-being of the people.
They also urged the government to provide support to farmers and traders, such as financial assistance and security escorts, to help alleviate the situation.
The high cost of food items has become a major concern in Sapele and its environ, with many residents struggling to afford basic necessities. The plea comes as cost of food items continue to rise across the country.
